Everyone knows of the Oscars, the Grammys and even the British Soap Awards. With so many celebrations of creative talent, the role fashion plays and he effect this season has on the industry can be overlooked.
In truth, Awards Season is a time to show appreciation to those who have paid homage to the fashion world. Various designers, models, stylists and other influential members of the fashion industry are brought together to be congratulated for their work. However, it is also important to recognise the contribution that is made off the catwalk.
Numerous designers expose themselves and their designs through subliminal prescience in films and music videos. Chanel’s greatest advertising tactic was having Sandra Bullock wear their white J12 watch in the film, The Blindside. So many people feel that they are uninvolved in fashion, simply because they have no keen interest in it. However, fashion is not just a subject of interest, it is a world and an industry that we are all involved in. Everybody is affected by the fashion world in some way; a plain blue jumper will be in a particular shade and will have been stitched and sewn in a certain way.
Fashion Award season commemorates all designers for their work and publicises underexposed couture. There are so many talented artists who are shadowed by the big names of Cavalli and McQueen, so it is admirable that this is a time for these newer and smaller names to be in the spotlight. These gratifications allow us to appreciate other members of the fashion industry.
At each event, the cameras are poised at the ready to see what each celebrity or famous individual is wearing. It is no longer just about the dress; the accessories are just as important at this stage and this is also the time when menswear is given publicity beyond GQ magazine. A designer’s career and year’s work could rest on the reception of the gown that Jennifer Lawrence wears.
This is the time that lesser exposed designers can take flight, as their work is awed and appreciated by thousands at the awards ceremonies and by more who watch the event on TV or read about it afterwards. Kate Bosworth was amongst the best-dressed at the Vanity Fair after party last year and sparkled and shone in Casadei heels. This exposure would have been fantastic for the Swedish designer.
Awards Season enables showcases of new designs and stylists through their celebrity clients and through events and parties, they gain recognition for themselves. There may be those who are not renowned figureheads, but every one and anyone taking artistic license and exploring with sartorial creativity deserves to be acknowledged for their talents.
