Gucci at Milan Fashion Week

A new fashion week, a new decade. So it seemed earlier today, when Gucci revealed their SS15 collection, which appeared to heavily influenced by the seventies.

But far be it from Frida Giannini, Gucci’s Creative Director, to not place a newish take on the designs featured on the catwalk. Vintage met structure, brass buttons accessorised trench coats and simple jersey dresses had their own unique stitching. It was a blast from the past of Gucci’s first set of collections.

Suede midi coats with belted straps matched their trouser counterparts, and handbags were ‘Alexa Chung-ed’ with guitar straps. Silk scarfs brought the level of sophistication up, as they adorned the necks of models in vintage and nautical-style shift dresses. These brass buttons were on everything: denim jackets, fitted coats…and the jackets that didn’t have them, made up for it with military-style embellishment.

It was all about old school texture, with furs, leather and suede dominating the runway. But the main piece, that had everyone talking about it post-show, were the calf-length denim cut-offs which shouldn’t have worked…but just did. Very Gucci.

My favourites included the gorgeous patterned dresses towards the end of the collection, but in particular, the blue and copper patterned ensemble, paired with the navy and ecru fur gilet. My kind of layering, one-hundred per cent.

A good start to MFW, Gucci. A complete retro-kick with A-line skirts and handkerchief scarfs. Not bad at all.

London Sights Square Rucksack – Accessorize – £35

-This backpack seems a little more sturdy, so is perhaps a better choice for those hardcore/weighed down students. I love the quirky pattern and the vibrant colours.

Don’t let a ton of textbooks stop you from looking cool on campus!

Bye bye overpriced jewellery!

Want to buy every item in every shop? Opening your purse and finding nada? You will be saved by this new find of mine: http://www.sister-vintage.co.uk

It’s a cute vintage style jewellery online boutique, with pieces ranging from (wait for it) 50p to £5 in price. 50p-£5!!!

I’ve never been so happy to have a new follower on Instagram, as without that, I would never have stumbled upon this gem.

Scour the website for yourself but in the space of 10 minutes, I had already ordered the Noah’s Ark charm necklace-£5 and the set of 2 Infinity midi rings-£2.

Happy (and guilt-free!) shopping!

Summer so soon

Moving to Auckland, I’ve had a rapid changeover from tights and thick knits to shorts and sunnies. Even though it’s technically the end of the Kiwi summer, pretty much every day is a bikni-at-the-beach one. For anyone else who is set to be graced with good weather (England’s heatwave?!), here are my early summer style tips!

Prints

Image

Bye bye block colour and hello…well, anything you want on your dress! Paisley, floral, fruit, animals-they’re all going to be making appearances this summer. It is the ultimate way to feminine style, but you can easily add some edge to your outfit with a leather jacket or boyfriend blazer. Prints and patterns means saving £££ too, as you’ll find more than what you’re after in thrift and charity shops.

White blazer

Image

Hermès showed us how it was done at Fashion Week and now it seems everyone wants to jump on this trend. Adding instant class to any outfit, this white blazer will see you look chic whenever you wear it. The crispness of the white will also not make you feel that you’re giving into the chill.

Dungarees

Image

No longer just for five-year-olds. Be it original denim, polka dot, floral print-whatever. Dungarees are an excellent change from regular denim shorts and can be just as casual. Play around with tops and t-shirts to create your own unique style and embrace everyone’s favourite all-in-one. Banish any midriff fears and happily wear crop tops again.

Bright nail polish

Image

Pastels are adorable but seeing as they are taking up so much the spotlight in clothing, brights can claim nails. I always feel bubblier with vivid tips and find it fun to match or clash. Tip: paint your nails after a day at the beach (or the playground’s sandpit, if you’re limited) as you’re hands will be naturally exfoliated when you get home. No need to pay for a manicure this season.

Don’t buy rings!

Image

There’s not point. Your fingers swell up in the heat (no, I know it’s not a nice thought, but we’re all humans-it happens!) so you’re going to end up buying the wrong size. This coming from a girl who has a ring for every finger and is still buying. Trust me. Go crazy when the sun goes away.

Headpieces

Image

When the sun is blazing, I can personally not stand having my hair down. It’s long and thick and the idea of it being on my neck is so unappealing. But a bun is not every girl’s best friend. Solution? Put something in your hair. My favourite staple is actually a turquoise silk scarf that I got free in a Shout! magazine (who remembers those days?!) and it saves me every time. Other options which are great are large bow headbands, flower garlands, oversized flowers, feathers… The list is endless but just be creative. My bad hair days are often when I get the most compliments because of the above ^^.

Cotton shorts

Image

Now, don’t ditch your denim completely. They will forever be wardrobe essentials. But, in the heat of summer, cotton is just an easier and more comfortable material to wear. Also, you have more choice in pattern and design. Win win? I think so.

Espadrilles

Image

There will be days that flip flops aren’t secure enough but you refuse to wear your beloved Converses when the sun is out. Make way for flat espadrilles. They’re cool (figuratively and literally), casual and so, so comfy. The stripey/fruity/spotty patterns are also incredibly cute. Relatively inexpensive too. You need some!

Denim cover up

Image

Jacket/shirt/waistcoat. I have one of each and they each come in handy every day of summer. You never know when a small breeze is gonna stay longer than intended (or wanted) and goosebumps in the sun is the worst thing every. Pop on a denim cover up and look stylish and sensible. If you’re shying away from the jacket as it’s too heavy, opt for a shirt; it looks pretty much the same and you can roll up the sleeves and tie it to become a crop.

Sunglasses

Image

Saving the ultimate essential ’till last. Now you’ll be split into two groups. The group that care for their possessions and are sensible and responsible: you guys should invest in a good brand whose quality will last you for many summers (Ray Bans are my fave). Unfortunately, I fall into the other category: the group who lose or break or forget their sunglasses, each and every time they buy a new pair. Not proud of it. But it happens. We need to keep on the style stakes whenever we buy a new pair. The advantage is we get to try different styles and designs and can change as fashion does.

Enjoy your summer x

Doing denim jackets right

It’s the most sought-after piece for SS’14: stylish and so useful. The perfect cover-up for when the sun isn’t at its best.

1. Lyla Mid Wash Denim Jacket – Boohoo – £30

Image

– I’ve always been a lover of darker denim and feel it doesn’t get enough credit. The hint of acid wash keeps it updated and on-trend.

2. Vintage Renewal Branded Denim Jacket – Urban Outfitters – £55

Image

– Again, I’m a big fan of Urban Outfitter’s ‘vintage renewal’ section; it’s all one size and has been made from vintage denim sourced by UO’s team. I love the big boxy look of this jacket.

3. Authentic Denim Trucker Jacket in Moonshine – Levi – £80

denim 5

-My Levi jacket is my most prized possession and has been since I was given it….six years ago. Before that, it belonged to my sister. It’s extra spending but completely worth it as a Levi will see you through your best days and the quality won’t let you down.

4. Laverna Acid Wash Boyfriend Denim Jacket – Missguided – £29.99

Image

-Acid wash, this time in light blue. This is the perfect jacket to wear day-to-night, as it will look funky over a summer dress and add some edge to clubwear, without detracting from your outfit.

5. Moto Floral Western Jacket – Moto – £45

Image

-Floral denim jackets are the epitome of summer; it’s almost rude not to get one. Topshop also have matching shorts and a skirt if you want to jump on the co-ords trend as well.

6. Reboot Denim Trucker Jacket – Diesel – £250

denim 6

-Before you have a heart attack at the price, Diesel is a high-quality brand, so it depends how much you deem worthy to spend on your staple items. Failing that, wait for the sales or for a friend/relative to visit the States. Denim will always be around, so there’s no rush for this beauty.

7. Blue Denim Jacket – H&M – £24.99

Image

-For those who stay away from acid wash and vintage and just want a simple denim jacket for this season and all of the ones that will follow.

N.B. This post came as a request from a friend but if anyone is looking for a particular item but doesn’t know where to look or wants other styles to compare with, message/follow/comment and I will happily go hunting for you 🙂

Laura Ralph

A friend told me about this designer several months ago, when I was ransacking shopping websites for matching separates. Now, with the focus on the SS’14 trend, you will even find a specific section for ‘co-ords’ on Topshop’s website. I love the gingham print set (see my previous post) but Laura Ralph’s designs are so cute and vintage-esque!

They are all handmade so you can be sure of the quality and the prints are so pretty and unique. I’m yet to buy any myself, mainly as I’ve been on a shopping ban (boo), in attempt to save for travelling, but here are my favourites (and hopefully the ones I shall be ordering as soon as I’m back in August!)

First on my wish list is this green tartan trouser set (£42)

20140214-231429.jpg

Next up is this super cute pastel art trouser set (£32)

20140214-232022.jpg

This rustic rose design shorts set has this vintage vibe to it (£25)

20140214-232303.jpg

This turquoise and ocean blue trouser set is perfect for brightening life up right now (£32)

20140214-233022.jpg

I really love the intricate detail of this design yet the colours are so simple (£25)

20140214-234839.jpg

If you love these designs as much as I do, like Laura Ralph on Facebook or shop online at thelittledeer.com ➡️ keep up to date via the Facebook page as any sold out designs can be re-made if popular, or similar fabrics constructed.

The new Temperley?

Alice Temperley ditches cute and innocent for a bit more of a daring style for her AW’14 collection. But fear not-it’s not too racy; the designer has just added some edge to her romantic fairytale-themed designs. Top picks of the show were definitely the nude boots, which took the term ‘thigh-high’ to a completely new level. The winter floral printed dresses were also iconic, building the bridge between adorable and sexy. I love the inspiration behind the designs; a heritage and ceremonial dress collection that was compiled of decorative prints, jacquard and a quality vintage look. Finally, Temperley devotees will have something to wear before dark!

Fashion for a fiver!

You better believe it: meet the King’s students who can dress well for under five quid

Fashion on the cheap – it’s not an easy thing to do. But there are some bargain savvy students out there. Here’s some King’s students who’ve bagged some pretty sweet key pieces for less than a fiver.

isa-530x706

Winter essentials: £3 scarf

Isa bought this ‘Girl in the Green Scarf’-inspired scarf from H&M for only £3. If second-hand buys aren’t your thing and you can’t be bothered to sift through the jumble sale that is Primark; H&M is the next most purse-friendly and fashion-forward place to shop. A coloured or patterned scarf is a great way to add life to a simple outfit or one consisting of neutral colours.

urbanout-530x706

Wendela wrapped up for just ONE POUND

Urban Outfitters had the prettiest duffle coat before Christmas…for £125. Wendela managed to find her coat (which is a pretty good look-a-like) for £1. ONE POUND. Cue widening of eyes and splutters of disbelief.  It’s a lovely coat and really really cosy. This is why every student needs to ditch the high street (I can’t believe I’m saying this) and go to vintage kilo sales. East London is your oyster and shall your purse never feel empty again!

kiera

Me in green

Would you believe this dress cost me £3.50? No? Thought not. I’m still not entirely sure how it can be justified for a once £175 dress to be reduced to under £5 but with student discount on top, this Topshop beauty was an absolute steal. It reminded me Keira Knightley’s dress in Atonement so, of course, I had to buy it.  It’s good quality material and saved me when I had an impromptu invite to a family formal party. If Primark and vintage markets are not really your thing, keep your eye on the sales as you never know what you can find!

romina-530x397

Keeping bright this winter

Romina has done very well for herself, bagging this Zara necklace for £5. Sounds impossible, right? A combination of sale combined with a faulty clasp, which was quickly and easily fixed, led to this bargain. Shops are always obligated to offer a reduced price for mildly faulty items; normally this is only 10% but what Zara doesn’t know, won’t hurt us ;)

A statement necklace is key usually, but particularly for SS’14. It is the perfect way to make a block-colour outfit stand out and it can instantly update an outfit. They are often rather expensive due to size and weight so look out for a good deal!

oscar-530x707

Oscar chanelling East London

Oscar always comes out in the most amazing clothes and his response is always “East London” when I ask him where he gets it all from. It really is the place to be; the place to get individual and unique pieces but without the expensive price tag. These markets and kilo sales truly are a student’s best friend. This burgundy/maroon coat is so useful as it will go with anything…and it cost only £4.50! You seriously don’t need to shop anywhere else!

Jenn-530x705

Making a statement with a Primark necklace

Jenn is also onto the statement necklace trend and also avoided paying the extortionate price tag for hers. Braving Primark, she found this interesting and unique necklace for a fiver. It definitely doesn’t seem as if it is from Primark and looks great against a block colour, such as Jen’s deep blue top. Statement necklaces are a need but I would never pay over £15 for one so sales and bargains are your best bet.

tweedjacket

Indigo in tweed

Indigo knows how to do vintage the right way. Picking up this excellent bargain tweed jacket with a fox-fur collar at a car boot sale, she ensures she looks fashionable and fabulous for only £4. Incredible. Vintage kilo sales, markets and boot sales are really the places to go if you love your clothes but hate your current bank balance. My favourite boot sale is in Ascot whilst Indigo prefers Sidcup. Head down Brick Lane or into Camden for an unexpected bargain too!

dressglitter-530x1081

Alice proving you can dress up for less than you think

Alice looks gorgeous in this bodycon sequin black dress with mesh cut-out detail. Most girls splash their cash to find a pretty party dress for their nights out. This particular bargain? Fiver from every girl’s godsend: Primark. So just because you’re on a tight budget this dry January, you can still look good on a night out-Primarni will always be there for you ;)

Late sale find!

This is the first year I have managed to not go bargain crazy and buy everything in the sales. I feel proud and my bank balance also thanks me for it.

But I couldn’t resist these…

Image

Ted Baker Olivie trousers. Printed trousers are my new staple. Comfy, fun, loud and pretty. Reduced to £55 in the sale and with my discount on top, it would have been rude not to, really.

Look book:

The NEEDS of the sales

I’ve heard from quite a few people that they haven’t found much in the current sale so here I am to sift out the best bargains and bring them to your attention!

Glamorous: Black PU Paperbag Waist Shorts: £10

-Glamorous have at least half of their sale at £10 so it really is worth checking it out and with 20% discount for students (even on top of sale price!) it would just be rude not to! Pair these shorts with a fitted shirt and statement necklace or casual vest top and heels for an ultra luxe look.

Glamorous Sale

Urban Outfitters: ‘Pins and Needles’ Velvet Floral Crop Top and Hotpants: £10 each

-I am really loving making separates at the moment and the obvious benefit is that you get three outfit options for £20. Normally I prefer either the top of the shorts to be a little less tight, especially with a curvy figure, so I basically am imploring my skinny minny or more body-confident friends to buy this adorable little set. Black tights and creepers and you’re good to go!

UO saleUO sale 1

Dahlia: Melissa Eyelet White Dress: £25

-For those of you who don’t know, Dahlia is a small fashion boutique on Carnaby Street in London, founded by two sisters who capture quirkiness and delicacy in their designs. I personally find that finding the right white dress is a mission but I instantly fell in love with this one. Don a pair of tan brogues and this cropped denim jacket!

Dahlia sale

Dahlia: Valencia Oversized Cropped Denim Shirt: £20

Dahlia sale 1

Whistles: Alison Red Mesh Insert Dress: £40

-Whistles have up to 70% off in the sale so if you enjoy the finer things in life, head to the website now. They have a good selection of cigarette trousers and cashmere cowl-neck jumpers. I particularly like this fitted fire-red shift dress as it oozes chic and would shape any body type beautifully. A perfect ‘office to drinks’dress; nude or black courts for the day and fierce jewellery and shoe boots for the evening.

Whistles sale

Ted Baker: Heidiy Water Bottle Print Jeans: £55

-Considering Topshop’s jeans are £40, £55 doesn’t seem too pricey, especially when it’s Ted Baker! These jeans have such an interesting and unique print/pattern and are perfect for welcoming SS’14. Grunge up with a cosy knit and boots until this miserable weather finally decides to leave us and crack out a chiffon white shirt and nude heels or flats when the sunshine comes. Ted Baker’s AW’13 is all between 30% and 50% reduced so if you had your eye on something earlier this year; now’s the time.

Ted Baker sale

ASOS: Astronomy Studded Leather Ankle Boots: £32.50

-I love studs and buckles and these boots remind me of the Alvin boots Topshop had last year that sold out quickly. The detail on this boot and the stacked heel make them versatile for a casual outfit in the day or with a cute dress in a bar.

Asos sale

River Island: Blue Mixed Print Scuba Jacket: £25

-This jacket is insane. I love the oriental feel and brightness of the colours. River Island previously had a pair of harem pants in this exact pattern which I adored too. A pair of jeans will be elevated immediately by the bold look of this blazer and it can also be a fun way to do smart.

River Island sale

Miss Selfridge: Cross and Diamond Chain: £15

-Statement necklaces are notoriously expensive but are excellent for transforming an overworn top or elevating a plain one. Miss Selfridge have this gorgeous one which used to be £50 so I would snap it up quickly at this price. I love the vintage feel and delicate but grunge aspect of Miss Selfridge’s clothes and accessories and this necklace is no exception. Wear it with a high-low skirt, military boots, layered vests and a leather jacket in the day or use it to create a detailed difference over a plain top or dress for a striking evening look.

Miss Selfridge sale
